The Importance of Knowing Who Does What to Whom In Your Business

A successful company has a coordinated infrastructure of people, business processes, procedures and products (or services). One of the most important components of any company is knowledge of the marketplace, of the competition, of its own products and services and how their unique, priced deliverables can meet wants and needs in the marketplace.

knowledge-empower-youBut what about knowledge of the internal process or components? Which person or department is (REALLY) doing what? How do the individuals interact? When do things break down?

Bottom-line, does everyone know what everyone else is supposed to do? You’d be surprised at how often the answer to that simple question is a resounding “no!”

And here’s why the knowledge of all internal processes and functions is equally as important as what is going on externally:

  • When employees know what they are supposed to do they are more likely to actually execute effectively and not drop any balls.
  • When employees know their jobs it is much more likely that the customers will be serviced more efficiently.notebook
  • There is less room for internal discord when everyone is knowledgeable about their respective roles and how they are supposed to interact.
  • There is minimal disruption when someone retires or is out for an extended period of time.
  • The office runs more smoothly and seamlessly with satisfied clients, employees, vendors and management.

All good, right? We think so and I encourage you in 2014 to take a good look at your infrastructure and assess whether or not your corporate knowledge encompasses internal roles, processes and procedures or if the knowledge is relegated to what happens externally. It is as simple as having an employee sit with the department that hands them their work and the department that the employee hands off the work to. It just makes good sense!
