How Do You Say Thank You For Referrals

Remember when you were a kid and you received a holiday or birthday gift or perhaps something small like a lollipop from the person that cut your hair or a little trinket from a neighbor or friend. What was the very first thing you heard when you reached out your hand for that special offering? I bet it was your parent or some other “grown-up” saying, don’t forget to say thank you to Mr/s ______ for ______.

It was that easy.  I will bet we all were taught the same lesson since our parents went to the same class – Thank You 101!

It’s still easy! In business perhaps one of the most important things that you can do is to say thank you when you get referrals. Referrals can be the lifeblood of your business and all it takes is a few “raving fans” to help stimulate new contacts and connections that can result in new business.

Here are some tips on how you can best say thanks to your referral sources:

  • Be very timely and by that I mean within 24 hours of receiving the referral. Call the person that was referred; then thank the referral source. The more time that elapses between receiving the referral and your actions the less gratitude and appreciation is conveyed.
  • A handwritten note or card has much more impact than an emailed thank you.. Have a stack of note cards available on your desk so that they will always be ready when a referral is received.
  • Depending upon the relationship that you have with the referral source a thank you gift may be appropriate. A donation made to their favorite charity is always well received. Other options are a gift certificate to a restaurant, an American Express gift check to be used however they wish, tickets to a sporting event, concert or theatrical event (assuming you know what they like!).

Bottom-line, everyone likes to feel appreciated. Your goal is to recognize their efforts and show your appreciation. You don’t have to go overboard.

Remember that perhaps the best show of appreciation is to offer them reciprocal referrals.  Sometimes you can and other times you may not be able to, but that’s a great way to say thanks.
